Passing the exam gets you the registry number. Keeping it means living up to this page — it's the difference between a badge and a standard.
1. Why this exists
A registry number is only worth displaying if it means something. This Code sets the behaviour Spot expects from every verified cleaner, and gives clients (and Spot) a clear, fair basis for what happens if it's broken.
2. The standard we hold you to
- Honesty about what you offer. Only claim services, availability, and experience you can actually deliver. Don't misrepresent your Spot status — display your genuine registry number and current certification status only.
- Safety first. Follow the chemical safety, hygiene and PPE standards tested in the Spot Certified exam in your real work, not just on the test.
- Respect for client property and privacy. Treat homes, belongings and any personal information you encounter with care and confidentiality. Never share client details without consent.
- Reliable communication. Turn up when agreed, or give reasonable notice if you can't. Respond to client enquiries in good time.
- Fair, transparent pricing. Agree pricing and scope with clients before work starts, and don't apply undisclosed charges.
- No discrimination. Provide services fairly, regardless of a client's race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, age, or other protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010.
- Report, don't investigate. If you have safeguarding concerns about a vulnerable person in a home you work in, raise them through the appropriate route (e.g. the local authority safeguarding team) rather than acting alone.
- Accountability. If something goes wrong — an accident, a complaint, a mistake — tell the client and, where relevant, Spot, honestly and promptly.
3. What happens if this Code is broken
Spot may investigate a report or complaint about a verified cleaner. Depending on severity, outcomes can include: a written warning, a requirement to retake part of the exam, temporary suspension of your directory listing, or permanent revocation of your registry number and Spot Certified status. We aim to give you a fair chance to respond before any listing or registry action, except where there's a serious safety concern requiring immediate suspension.
4. What Spot commits to in return
- We'll keep the exam content accurate and reviewed by a real cleaning/health & safety professional (see The Spot Standard).
- We'll only make claims about Spot that are true and checkable — we don't fabricate user numbers, reviews, or endorsements, and we expect the same honesty from you.
- We'll handle any report or complaint about you fairly, and won't remove a registry number without a real basis for doing so.
- We'll keep your registry number and public profile accurate and up to date once you're listed.
5. Relationship to our other terms
This Code sits alongside our general Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policy. Where there's a conflict specifically about conduct as a verified cleaner, this Code takes precedence.
